Introduction

Welcome back to my channel! In today's video, I will be showing you how to make a cute and cuddly axolotl keychain. This keychain may be a bit on the larger side, but it can also double as a mini plush toy. I have been making plush toys for several years now, and I have received numerous requests to share my process for making axolotls. So, today I will be sharing a step-by-step tutorial on how to create your very own axolotl keychain. This is a great project to keep you busy and entertained while staying safe and healthy at home.

Background

I have been creating plush toys for about five years now, and during that time, I have experimented with different designs and materials. One of my favorite creations is the axolotl keychain. The inspiration for this adorable creature came from my love for unique and quirky animals. Axolotls are fascinating amphibians with their cute smiles and external gills. They make for the perfect plush toy or keychain accessory.

Materials Needed

Before we dive into the tutorial, let's gather all the materials you'll need for this project. Here's a list of what you'll need:

  1. Pink Plush Fabric
  2. Wool Felt
  3. Scalloped Edge Scissors
  4. Needle and Thread
  5. Toy Stuffing
  6. Safety Eyes
  7. Tulip Slick Fabric Paint
  8. Barbecue Skewer
  9. Keychain Ring

Now that you have all the necessary materials, let's get started on creating your own axolotl keychain.

Step 1: Drawing the Shape

To begin, take your pink plush fabric and draw out the shape of your axolotl. The shape should resemble a potato with a swirly twirly body and a tail. Feel free to let your creativity flow as you draw the shape from your imagination. There is no specific pattern to follow, so have fun with it!

Step 2: Cutting and Sewing the Pieces

Once you have your shape drawn out, carefully cut around the outline. Place this cut piece on top of another piece of plush fabric, with the right sides together. Cut around the shape again to create two identical pieces.

Using a piece of wool felt, create scalloped edges for the gills. Make sure they are about four bubbles high, with a rounded edge. Cut out six of these scalloped pieces.

Next, place three scalloped pieces on each side of the axolotl, facing them inwards. Insert them between the two plush fabric pieces to hold them in place. Hand-stitch these pieces to secure them before moving on to the sewing machine.

Step 3: Adding the Wool Felt Details

Using small stitches, sew around the edges of the wool felt pieces to attach them securely to the plush fabric. This can be a bit fiddly, but take your time and stitch right along the inner edge of the felt.

Step 4: Sewing the Plush Fabric

Now it's time to take your project to the sewing machine. Start sewing along the lines of the pattern, ensuring that you backstitch at the beginning and end. Sew all the way around until you reach the spot where you want to leave a gap. This gap will allow you to turn the plush inside out later on.

Step 5: Stuffing the Plush

Once you have completed the sewing, trim any excess fabric and leave a tab where you left the gap. This will make it easier to turn the plush inside out. Begin stuffing the plush starting from the head and working down to the tail. Leave the gap as the last area to stuff.

After stuffing, use a needle and thread to stitch up the hole and secure the stuffing inside the plush. Make sure the plush is firmly stuffed and all the seams are closed.

Step 6: Creating the Tail

To make the tail, take another piece of wool felt and trace around it, leaving a hole in the middle for attaching it to the plush. This can be a tricky step, so take your time and use tiny stitches to attach the tail securely to the plush.

Step 7: Making the Arms and Legs

To create the arms and legs, trace your own finger onto the plush fabric and straight stitch along the outline. Cut out the pieces, turn them inside out using a tool for pressing, and fold in the raw edges.

Step 8: Attaching the Arms and Legs

Using the same needle and thread, stitch the arms and legs onto the plush. Position them flat against the body or have them sticking out, depending on your desired pose for the plush.

Step 9: Adding the Face

For the face, cut the backs off a pair of safety eyes and glue them in place. This method ensures that the eyes stay securely attached without any risk of coming loose.

To paint on the mouth, use tulip slick fabric paint and a barbecue skewer. Take your time and paint the mouth carefully in the direction of the fabric to avoid smudging. Remember, precision is key!

Step 10: Finishing Touches

To complete your axolotl keychain, sew a keychain ring onto the top of the plush using a needle and thread. This will allow you to attach the keychain to your keys or any other desired item.

Conclusion
