Crochet Sock Tutorial: How to Make Ribbing

Welcome to part three of my crochet sock tutorial with Small But Kinda Mighty. In this video, I'll guide you through making my favorite crochet ribbing technique. With this method, you'll achieve a stretchy and resilient cuff for your socks or other projects like top-down hats.

3. Making the Crochet Ribbing

To start, I'll show you how to crochet the ribbed cuff of a sock using the extended single crochet decrease technique. This decrease is useful if you find the leg of your sock too baggy around your ankle after the heel break. By performing the decrease at the edges of the sock, you can achieve a better fit.

To do an extended single crochet decrease:

  • Insert your hook, yarn over, and pull up a loop.
  • Yarn over and pull through only the first loop on your hook.
  • Yarn over and pull through both loops.

Next, we'll move on to creating the cuff itself. Begin by slip stitching into the first stitch of the round, using a contrasting color if desired. Chain two, then make a double crochet in the same stitch as the chain two. Continue making a double crochet in each stitch of the round.

For the ribbing, we'll alternate between front post double crochet and back post double crochet. This technique involves placing your hook around the post of the stitch rather than under the head. By doing so, you create raised ridges that add texture to the cuff.

To make a front post double crochet:

  • Yarn over and insert your hook around the post from the front of the fabric.
  • Yarn over, pull up a loop, and complete the stitch as usual.

To make a back post double crochet:

  • Yarn over and bring your hook around the post from the back of the fabric.
  • Yarn over, pull up a loop, and complete the stitch.

Continue alternating between front post and back post double crochet, repeating the pattern for as tall as you want the cuff to be.

To finish off the cuff, work a final sequence of front post double crochet, back post double crochet, front post half double crochet, back post half double crochet, front post single crochet, and back post single crochet. Slip stitch into the next stitch and then break the yarn.

And there you have it! Now you know how to create ribbing for your crochet socks or other projects. Stay tuned for the next part of this tutorial, where I'll demonstrate how to crochet the heel.

FAQs

Q: Can I use the crochet ribbing technique for other projects besides socks? A: Absolutely! This ribbing technique can be used to finish off projects like top-down hats or any other item where you'd like to add a stretchy and resilient edge.

Q: What is the advantage of using front post and back post double crochet? A: By alternating between the two, you create raised ridges that add texture and elasticity to the cuff. This ribbing technique allows for a snug fit while still being comfortably stretchy.

Q: Do I need special yarn or tools to make crochet ribbing? A: No, you can use the same yarn and tools you typically use for your crochet projects. The key is to choose an appropriate yarn weight and hook size to achieve the desired tension and elasticity.

Q: Can I modify the height of the cuff? A: Yes, you can customize the cuff height based on your preferences. Simply repeat the ribbing pattern for as many rounds as you'd like the cuff to be tall.

Q: Can I use a different color for the cuff? A: Certainly! Feel free to experiment with different color combinations to add visual interest to your socks or other projects.
