The History of My Crochet Journey

Introduction

Welcome back to the Crochet Nurse channel. In today's video, I will be sharing my personal history with crochet. I recently got tagged in a question series by my fellow crocheter, Melanie from Hook to the Left. In this video, I will be answering ten questions about my crochet journey and discussing how I got started, what I've learned, and what I'm currently working on. So grab your hooks and let's dive into the world of crochet!

How Long Have You Been Crocheting?

It all started about four years ago when I picked up a crochet hook for the first time. But my journey with crochet actually began twenty years ago. Back then, I purchased some supplies and dabbled in crochet for a brief period. However, life got busy and I put my hooks aside. It wasn't until four years ago that I decided to reignite my passion for crochet and make it a permanent part of my life.

How Did You Learn Initially?

While many people learn crochet from their family members, I had to rely on good old-fashioned books to teach myself. Neither my mother, grandmother, nor anyone else in my family had any experience with crocheting or knitting. So, I took it upon myself to learn through instructional books. Initially, I started with books but later turned to YouTube tutorials for further guidance. Watching fellow crocheters on YouTube proved to be immensely helpful in improving my skills and learning new techniques.

What Made You Want to Learn Crochet?

The initial spark to learn crochet came from my desire to create household items. I've always had a passion for crafting things for my home, and crochet seemed like the perfect avenue to explore. Additionally, when I became a mother to twins, I saw it as an opportunity to share a craft with my daughter. However, she didn't share the same interest, which led me away from crochet for a while. But as I approached retirement, I yearned for a fulfilling hobby that would keep me both busy and productive. Crochet fit the bill perfectly, allowing me to create practical items like clothing, rugs, and dish towels.

The First Item You Ever Crocheted

The first item I ever crocheted holds a special place in my heart. It was a misshapen baby blanket that I made about twenty years ago. Although it didn't turn out as I had envisioned, I felt an overwhelming sense of pride in completing it. The blanket was made using white size 4 weight yarn and featured a simple double crochet stitch. Despite its imperfections, I couldn't bring myself to throw it away, as it symbolized the beginning of my crochet journey and the dedication I put into learning the craft.

The Last Thing You Crocheted

Currently, I've been focusing on crocheting practical items such as dish towels. I find joy in creating functional pieces that can be used in my everyday life. Additionally, I'm working on a large crochet top, which I will be sharing with you all in the near future. The top has been a time-consuming project, taking me about a week and a half to complete, but I'm excited to see the finished result.

The Last Stitch or Technique You Learned

In my recent quest to make dish towels, I decided to try my hand at the Tunisian stitch. This stitch added a unique texture to the towels and gave them a distinct look. I started with a simple Tunisian stitch using a hook I already had. However, I plan to explore more Tunisian stitches in the future and expand my knowledge of this technique.

What Are You Currently Crocheting?

Currently, I'm working on a project in collaboration with Seda from Crochet Exclamation Point. Unfortunately, I can't reveal the item just yet, as it will be a part of our joint video. However, I can assure you that it's an exciting project that I am eagerly working on. Stay tuned for the big reveal on the 26th!

Something You Want to Learn in Your Next Adventures for Crochet

One of my ambitious crochet goals is to create either shorts or pants. While it may seem like an unusual choice, I've been inspired by a pattern I came across in "My Crochet Closet" book. The pattern, known as "Savory Shorts," caught my eye with its beautiful shell and wave design. I envision making a longer version of the shorts for my personal style. Soft cotton yarn would be my material of choice to ensure comfort and coziness.

The Worst Frogging Experience

Frogging, the act of unraveling crocheted work, can sometimes be frustrating. My worst frogging experience happened when I was working on a shawl using Red Heart Unforgettable yarn. Unbeknownst to me, this yarn proved to be quite difficult to unravel. It took a significant amount of effort to undo my work and save the yarn. Since then, I've been hesitant to use Red Heart Unforgettable or similar yarns that may pose a challenge during the frogging process.

The Item That You're Most Proud Of

While not the most visually stunning item I've created, I take immense pride in a blanket I made for my son. This blanket, adorned with a chevron pattern, holds sentimental value for me. It was a labor of love that took me a month to complete, which is longer than my usual projects. The size alone, measuring 75 by 90 inches, made it a monumental undertaking. Completing this blanket gave me an overwhelming sense of accomplishment and reinforced my love for crochet.

Conclusion

And that concludes my crochet history. I've shared my journey from the initial spark of interest to the projects I'm currently working on. Crochet has become an integral part of my life, allowing me to express my creativity while creating practical items for myself and loved ones. I hope you've enjoyed learning more about my crochet journey, and as always, feel free to share any questions or comments you may have. Happy crocheting!
