Summer in Nairobi, Kenya

As a Canadian who moved to Nairobi, Kenya over 20 years ago, I want to share with you the vibrant summer we're experiencing here. It has been about three weeks, maybe a month, of warm weather, with temperatures reaching 82 degrees Fahrenheit (27 degrees Celsius) and almost 28 degrees Celsius inside my yarnery. The kids are eager to enjoy outdoor activities, especially swimming. Before the rainy season arrives, we're making the most of the sunny days.

Finished Objects: Sundae Granny Baby Blanket

Let me introduce you to my latest finished object, the Sundae Granny Baby Blanket. This lacy and airy blanket is perfect for the summer season. While it would be great in cotton, I opted for a regular four weight acrylic for this project. I have the pattern available on my website, secretyarnery.com. I'm considering adding a cream-colored border to enhance its beauty, but I'll wait until the weather cools down a bit. It's just too hot for extensive crochet work right now.

Work in Progress: The Hobbit Cloak

Moving on to my work in progress, I'm currently crocheting a hobbit cloak. I must admit, I've had to frog it back three or maybe four times to ensure it's perfectly square. By placing stitch markers strategically, I achieve a symmetrical square shape. To determine if it's square, I fold it in half, and the center aligns with the sides. I'm determined to make this cloak a true square, putting in the effort whenever the weather allows me to work on it.

Exciting News: Planning a New Project

I'm thrilled to be working on a new project, but I want to keep it as a surprise until next week. It involves creating pages for a planner, offering crochet enthusiasts a comprehensive tool to organize their projects and ideas. As I put together the pages and compile them into a PDF format, I'm excited about this new endeavor. Although I haven't created a PDF before, I'm up for the challenge. Stay tuned for the big reveal next week!

Puzzle Time: Completing a 2,000-Piece Puzzle

In between my crochet projects and planning sessions, I took on the challenge of completing a 2,000-piece puzzle. It was my Christmas puzzle for the year, and it brought me joy and relaxation while my kids were busy with their exams. It took a considerable amount of time and effort, but the end result was worth it. I have a special puzzle board that I made by cutting a piece of MDF and adding a beaded edge to prevent the pieces from falling off. With a large swivel underneath, it allows the board to spin, making puzzle-solving more convenient.

Adding Some Fun Decor: Play Button and T-Shirts

As I glance over at my crochet workspace, I can't help but admire the fun decor surrounding it. I have my play button, a symbol of achievement and recognition for my YouTube channel, prominently displayed. The play button is accompanied by a spinning disco ball and sentimental items like my grandma's flower and teapot. This little corner brings a sense of happiness and positive energy to my workspace, boosting my creativity and motivation.

Enjoying Summertime with Kids

With the warm weather and the kids eager to play outside, I make it a priority to spend quality time with them. Whether it's swimming, playing games, or simply enjoying music together, these outdoor activities bring us closer as a family. Engaging in summertime fun is a wonderful way to create lasting memories and make the most of the season before the rainy season, known as the "long rains," arrives. Embracing these moments brings joy to both the kids and me.

Upcoming Events: Tutorial, Caking Party, and Class

I have an exciting lineup of events for you to look forward to. Tomorrow, I'll be releasing a new tutorial, showcasing a crochet project that you won't want to miss. Additionally, next Tuesday, I'll be hosting a caking party, where we'll explore the art of yarn cake making. This event will take place eight hours before our usual live chat on Fridays. Be sure to check the video description for a link to join the fun. Lastly, on Thursday, I'll be teaching another class for beginners, offering valuable tips and guidance for those new to crochet.

Unexpected Smells: The Mystery of the Garlic

Now, here's a little story that took me by surprise. Every time I walked into the yarnery, I noticed a peculiar smell, akin to something decomposing. I was convinced that there must be a mouse or a lizard hiding somewhere, causing an unpleasant odor. After some investigation, I discovered the source of the smell - my garlic plant. Yes, I decided to grow garlic in my kitchen, and the plants emitted a strong garlicky scent. It's a reminder to always expect the unexpected, even in the world of crochet.
